There’s nothing better than getting in from a day of adventures on crisp white snow to find the warmth and generosity of an independent chalet host, a roaring fire and dinner made with love and local produce.
Rather than being greeted by hordes of seasonal staff, these chalets are the host’s homes; expect to be welcomed like an old friend. Our small snowy collection, like all the places listed with Sawday’s, have been inspected by fellow people, food and culture lovers. Here are 10 of our favourites ahead of the season:
1. Le Grand Joux, 74110 Morzine, Haute-Savoie
Arrive in dramatic style by snowmobile or helicopter: a
luxurious Alpine lodge and spa await. Built of seasoned wood and surrounded by
snowy peaks, the chalet is a chic retreat in the tranquil hamlet of Graydon,
close to the pistes of the Portes du Soleil.
2. The White Valley, 74110 Morzine, Savoie
This brand spanking new chalet, a minute’s car-hop from the gondola to Avoriaz, is a pretty 15-minute stroll from the centre of Morzine. The views are stupendous, the luxuries fabulous and there’s an Italian chef creating magic in the kitchen.
Best for foodies
3. Chalet Savoie Faire, 73260 La Léchère, Savoie
Throw open the shutters to snowy peaks and clear skies, explore the endless pistes of the Trois Vallees and come home to fabulous meals. Nikki’s food is a serious treat and she opens the vast kitchen for cookery classes; great fun for adults and children alike.
4. Chalet Amuse Bouche, 74110 Morzine, Haute-Savoie
With access to the vast Portes du Soleil, a new chalet with a friendly table for memorable meals and a hot tub for the stars. Foodie hosts Lindsay and Steve (he’s a proper chef, she’s a baker) both look after you superbly during your Alpine adventure.
Full of character and history
5. La Ferme de Margot, 74110 Morzine, Haute-Savoie
This chalet is a labour of love for its British hosts; a renovated farmhouse built in 1835, it still has an authentic feel with original slates, knobbly beams, and heaps of space. Snuggle under sheepskins on the sheltered balcony and devour a chocolate muffin; the food is fabulous, the beers, wines and cheeses are top-notch.
This mountain hamlet farmhouse, 300 years old, has been renovated with a stylish and sympathetic eye. Authentic on the outside, it is effortlessly elegant within, thanks to owner-hosts Sam and Alvaro who combine charming soft furnishings with reclaimed wood and stone.
7. Chalet Cerisier, 74400 Chamonix, Haute-Savoie
There are spectacular views of the snow-capped Alps and pine forests from this cosy, modern chalet close to the Chamonix Valley’s much-loved slopes. After a hard day outside, rest your weary limbs in the basement sauna or take a glass of bubbly to the wraparound balcony or the hot tub and admire the glorious mountain views.
8. Maison Coutin, 73210 Peisey Nancroix, Savoie
Families will love the relaxed young hosts, delicious Slow meals and the peace of this pretty Savoie village, with its lift to the Paradiski.
Great value and with a deeply eco-friendly ethos: the owners’ concern for green issues permeates every aspect of the stay.
Perfect for families
9. Chalet APASSION, 74340 Samoëns, Haute-Savoie
Perched on the mountainside above the lovely old resort of Samoëns, is this luxurious, new-build pine chalet. Majestic Giffre Valley views stretch from the terraces and balcony, and a great big cedar hot tub is the perfect place to unwind and soak away the day’s strain.
